![]() ![]() Its a baffling misfire, an ill-conceived attempt at looking to the past in order to enlighten us about our future, but most of all it's disappointing. All of this is difficult to come to terms with as I very much am in the bag for excessively bombastic superhero films that have a distinct point of view and while Wonder Woman 1984 is most certainly excessive and most definitely carves out where it wants to stand in the pantheon of the genre none of what transpires on screen ever feels satisfying despite the virtue of what the film is trying to convey. The oddity that is this Wonder Woman sequel is difficult to describe as it's still somewhat mind-blowing that Jenkins along with co-writers Geoff Johns (a former executive at DC Entertainment and a prolific writer and producer) and Dave Callaham (seasoned franchise screenwriter) submitted this screenplay to Warner Brothers with the confidence not only that it would be approved, but that it was good while it's even more confounding that Warner greenlit this $200 million experiment. In other words, it's trying to make the simple idea at its center feel more complex and therefore more sophisticated when in reality said execution simply feels perplexing. It's almost as if the film actively goes out of its way not to necessarily make its message more convoluted, but rather like it's trying to do or say more than what is actually on its mind. There is a wealth of good intent imbued on the project as writer/director Patty Jenkins returns to continue crafting the titular character into more of a beacon of hope than ever, but come the end of this bloated two and half hour epic it's nearly impossible to see how anyone associated with the project could have mistaken it for quality rather than recognizing the bizarre (and often times extremely cheesy) choices that were made, not to mention the incredibly preposterous nature of it all. It's not that it's soul-crushingly bad, but it's just not good and it for one reason or another feels like it's completely mistaken silly for entertaining. It's not a perfect sequel, but it's a good sequel. The core story, however, does have some issues, but not enough that these other factors can't elevate it. The Cold War setting is unique, the action is good, and the performances are excellent. And that's the biggest thing I can say with Wonder Woman 1984, there is fun to be had. Nothing on par with the no man's land scene in the first one, but still, there is fun to be had here. It's also just nice to see her kick ass, and this is a gorgeously directed movie with some pretty stellar action scenes. ![]() She has a stronger understanding of this world now, and it's nice to see her development. But what really pulls the movie ahead above all else is, of course, Wonder Woman herself. I know they really wanted him back, and he's great in the movie, but the way he's brought back via bodily hijacking is just a bit too creepy and forced. ![]() I would really have liked to see more of her in full Cheetah but she's pretty good. For the other villain, Kristen Wiig, she's pretty good. However, Pedro Pascal as the antagonist using the stone elevates the whole thing to a great level of fun. The weird wishing stone artifact that the film surrounds itself on is confusing at best and all too often just plain silly. The morals of the film are a little wonky, and just the very nature of the conflict is a bit strange. ![]() Well this movies reception really went all over the place didn't it? For me though, while it's not as good as the first one, it is still an enjoyable sequel that is a great stage for Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. Rating: PG-13 (Violence|Sequences of Action) But soon, Diana will have to muster all of her strength, wisdom and courage as she finds herself squaring off against Maxwell Lord and the Cheetah, a villainess who possesses superhuman strength and agility. Though she's come into her full powers, she maintains a low profile by curating ancient artifacts, and only performing heroic acts incognito. Diana Prince lives quietly among mortals in the vibrant, sleek 1980s - an era of excess driven by the pursuit of having it all. ![]() ![]() ![]() Palm Cockatoo, Also known as the Goliath Cockatoo have red facial markings and appear as large blackbirds.
